THE POORNESS OF YOUNGSTOWN
A service project by Class One in 2011
Our class chose 6 issues in the world that were on their hearts. Animal charities, Hurrican Katrina, homelessness, sick kids, veterans, and recycling were the contenders. It was a huge win for homelessness. Students in Class One really felt that there was so much to learn and that there must be something that could be done. Beginning in February, we began to do our research. We made wonderful community connections along the way. As you can see by this video, Habitat for Humanity, the Rescue Mission, and the Mayor really made our service project come to life. Academics were linked to the project as well. This was a perfect example of how we can teach to the whole child and be successful. We are not only teaching academics but ways that students can be active citizens and participants in their communities. They are our future!
