TICKETS AND REWARDS
Students can earn tickets throughout the day for a variety of reasons such as helping a peer, working hard, trying his/her best, taking a risk, giving a compliment, making the right choice, doing what is expected, etc. We count tickets every Friday.
NEW: Students will be required to put their tickets into 3 envelopes: spend, bills, and give.
SPEND: Class reward list
1. Candy (max. 2 pieces) (5-10 )
2. Stickers (5)
3. Certificates (15)
4. Art (20)
5. Small toy (25)
6. Computer (30)
*7. School Supply (40): Students can pick from a drawer full of schools supplies.
8. Lunch Bunch (50): The students get to have their lunch in the classroom. I believe that this helps me to get to know your child in a different setting. Its also a time where we work on our manners and appropriate table conversation :)
BILLS:
Students will have to pay certain bills each week to help the classroom run. Very similar to what you pay at home.
GIVE:
Students will learn about giving by setting tickets to help others.
Fun fact: The best sellers are school supplies, Lunch Bunch, and computers.
*Donations of extra school supplies such as crayons, markers, colored pens, fun pencils, notebooks, journals, art notebooks, art supplies (paints, brushes), etc. are always welcomed :) I try to find things that making learning fun, enjoyable and encourage "school" to happen anywhere!
The class also earns tickets as a whole. In the beginning of the year, they will vote on a list of the different type of parties that they would like to have throughout the year as they reach their ticket goal. When the class reaches their goal, for example 150 tickets, we will take a class vote on the party.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Instead of reffering to "class rules", we in Class One, call them "class expectations." Ms. Amy, the speech therapist, has helped us implement a new program called Social Thinking last year. The program helps students to understand the why behind all of the "rules" in the world. We even talk about the hidden rules in our society. Some children never pick up these hidden rules or expectations so we will have many discussions on different situations and role play so that our students really become aware of appropriate behavior. We want them to be successful!
In the first week of school the students will be introduced to the social thinking program. We, as a class, will come up with acceptable behaviors that we all want to see in class. These behaviors will then be referred to as class expectations. They will be posted in the room and students will draw a picture (for the visual learners) to help remind them of what is expected. These will be written down in a contract form in which teacher, student, and parent will sign. When unexpected behavior is shown (Yes, we do use the vocabulary expected and unexpected and we hope you will too!) the student will be privately reminded and then referred to the chart and or contract if needed. Often, that is all that needs to occur. However, if unexpected behavior does occur and reminders do not work, then we will take whatever further steps we need to and usually they are on a "need basis". Some students just need to have alone time for a few minutes (supervised), some students need to journal about it, others need to be removed from the class for a while, etc. The last resort is usually speaking with Ms. Lydia and a call home.
Even though most of our students have had some difficult school experiences, we have come to see changes in behavior once they begin attending our school. When they finally feel safe and accepted their demeanor begins to change. Our students at MKS know that they are going to receive all the help that they need. So, anxiety, stress and pressures that they had experienced before will begin to diminish. We teach specific strategies that they can use when they do begin to experience those feelings.
You will receive a weekly behavior chart which will need signed and returned EVERY MONDAY!
